Should You Be Friends With Your Ex? Questions to Ask First

There is no universal rule that exes can never be friends. But friendship is rarely a neutral next step when one person still hopes it will become a relationship again. The useful question is not “Are we mature enough?” It is “What does contact do to me right now?”

Ask these three questions

Can I hear about their dating life without falling apart? If not, friendship may be too soon.

Would I still want this friendship if reconciliation were impossible? An honest no is information, not a character flaw.

Do we have boundaries that both people actually follow? A friendship needs more than vague promises to “stay close.”

Take a pause before choosing forever

A defined period of space can make the answer clearer. You do not have to declare someone erased from your life. You can simply say, “I need a few months without contact so I can reset.”

If you must stay in touch because of work, children, housing, or shared responsibilities, keep messages logistical and predictable. Read the no-contact rule with real-life exceptions and how to stop checking social media for practical support.
