The First Week After a Breakup: A Gentle Survival Plan

The first week can feel unreal. You may want to fix it, explain it, undo it, or disappear from everyone. Do not ask yourself to become wise about it immediately. The aim is to make the next few days safe and manageable.
Day one: reduce the decisions
Tell one safe person. Eat something simple. Drink water. If you need space from messages or social media, create it before the urge to check gets bigger. You do not owe anyone a polished explanation.
Days two to four: create a minimum routine
Choose a wake-up range, one shower or walk, one meal, and one person to contact. A routine this small is not trivial—it gives your brain a few predictable points when everything else has changed.
Days five to seven: make a contact plan
Decide whether you need no contact, logistical-only contact, or a short pause before deciding. Write the plan down when you are calm. It is much easier than negotiating it in the middle of a late-night wave.
Use our breakup recovery checklist when you are ready for a longer view, and no contact guide if you need help creating space without making it a game.
